About export invoices for Indian freelancers

An export invoice is the primary document that proves you provided a service to a client outside India and are entitled to zero-rated GST treatment. Getting it right matters: your bank uses it to release the FIRA, the GST department relies on it if you ever claim a refund, and your income tax return quotes it as the source of foreign-currency income.

The rules aren't complicated — but they are strict about format. This builder enforces the required fields (GSTIN when applicable, LUT declaration, currency, invoice number series, payment terms) so you can focus on the work, not the paperwork. If you want the full context, read the Freelancer Compliance Guide, the Getting Paid Guide and the Documentation Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if you're registered under GST. If your aggregate turnover is under the threshold and you haven't voluntarily registered, an export invoice without a GSTIN is perfectly valid. If you are registered, GSTIN is mandatory on every invoice.
